The accent on Oregon is spectacular! The natural areas run from desert or prairie grasslands to the jagged Pacific Coast. Within the borders of Oregon are old growth forests, Crater Lake National Park, Oregon Caves National Monument, and Mount Hood. Oregon has the Pacific Ocean to the west and the state of Idaho to the east. The state of Washington rests north and California and Nevada are south of Oregon. Out of the fifty states of the United States, Oregon stands twenty-seventh in order of population. Over three and a half million live the state. Oregon has a land area of almost 99,000 square miles. It is the ninth largest state. The tallest elevation is Mount Hood at 11,240 feet. The lowest spot at zero feet is the Pacific Ocean. Oregon became the thirty-third state of America in 1859. The Williamette Valley, the Cascade and Klamath Mountain ranges, the Rogue Valley, and the Columbia River Plateau are all distinct geographical areas of Oregon. The Columbia River follows most of the northern boundary between Oregon and Washington. Almost one hundred percent of hazelnuts grown in the United States are harvested in Oregon. The state has over three hundred wineries. Apples, potatoes, hops, and grass seed are dominant crops. The timber industry has been on the decline, but Oregon is still a major lumber producer. Oregon has over twenty different state symbols. The Oregon grape has been the state flower since 1899. The children of the state chose the Western Meadowlark as the state bird in 1927. Oregon is nicknamed the Beaver State. The state fish is the Chinook Salmon, the Oregon state tree is the Douglas Fir, and the state insect is the Oregon Swallowtail Butterfly.

Salem is the state capitol of Oregon. It is the second most populated city and is the Marion County seat. The largest Salem employer is the government and is the location of many food processing factories. Medford was incorporated in 1885. It contains the Rogue Valley International-Medford Airport. Nearby Ashland is home to the annual award-winning Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Grants Pass became a city in 1887 and was built along the Rogue River. Scenic jet boat trips can be taken up the Rogue River. Klamath Falls became an official city in 1905 and is in Klamath County. Crater Lake, the deepest lake in the United States, is part of Crater Lake National Park inside Klamath County. Eugene, Oregon is located in the Williamette Valley. This town showcases cultural arts with a Bach Festival, dozens of historic museums and galleries, and the Williamette Science & Technology Center. Hood River, Oregon is close to the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, the Mount Hood excursion railway, and Multnomah Falls. Hood River on the Columbia River is a well-known windsurfing area. Gold Beach, Oregon on the Pacific Coast is famous for both fresh and saltwater fishing, whale watching, and jet boat tours up the Salmon River. Portland, Oregon is the biggest city. The elevation of the city is seventy-seven feet above sea level. Portland claims the world’s smallest park at three square feet. The city offers over nine thousand acres of parks. Mount Hood, only about an hours drive away, has recreation of camping, fishing, hiking, biking, and skiing available nearly all year round.
